Levolux keeps cool at Wimbledon

Competition has been fierce this summer at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, but occupants of its Millennium Building remain cool and comfortable thanks to the range of Internal Blinds, supplied and installed by Levolux.

As the UK's leading Solar Shading specialist, Levolux was chosen to share their unparalleled expertise to develop a bespoke solution for the Millenuim Building, which is used by players, press and photographers, ballboys/girls, officials and Club members. The project required a number of different types of Blinds to be co-ordinated.

For the changing rooms, press areas and officials’ offices some 180 bespoke Levolux roller blinds were produced in a white linen fabric, specially woven with vertical stripes in the Wimbledon colours of green and purple. This was more complex than it would at first seem, since not all the windows are the same size, therefore, considerable design and manufacturing effort had to be developed to keep the spacing of the stripes uniformed.
The roller blinds are manually operated but employ a bead chain and a spring to ensure the system is robust and will not fail or be damaged if the hem bar or fabric is pulled instead of the chain. Translucent to allow those inside to still see out, the blinds serve the triple purpose of solar shading, privacy and glare – an important factor where there are computer screens and TV monitors.

For the restaurant area around 40 Roman blinds were supplied. These again feature stripes in the Wimbledon colours but the angled glazing presented an added complication, the head of each blind is tapered to suit the panel it shades.

Within the press courtyard, Levolux supplied 20 external awnings which provide both shading and protection from the weather. Again in the Wimbledon colours, the blinds project 1.5m and measure some 3m in width, are individually motorised and shade shops supplying film and facilities. They serve the same function around the press restaurant but are complemented by bespoke vertical roller screens, which can be lowered to provide protection from the rain along the open front of the building.
